Firefighting equipment is a fundamental component of modern fire control systems. Its working principles are based on the fire triangle, which consists of fuel, oxygen, and heat. By physically or chemically disrupting these conditions, firefighting systems are able to control and extinguish fires effectively. With the advancement of fire protection technology, different types of equipment have been continuously improved to meet diverse emergency scenarios.
Water-based firefighting systems are among the most widely used. Their primary mechanism relies on cooling and oxygen reduction. When water or fine mist is discharged onto a fire, it rapidly absorbs a large amount of heat, lowering the temperature of the burning material below its ignition point and interrupting combustion. At the same time, fine water mist quickly vaporizes in high-temperature environments, diluting oxygen concentration and weakening flame sustainability.
Foam-based systems extinguish fires through both isolation and cooling effects. Once foam is applied, it forms a stable insulating layer over the burning surface, blocking contact between oxygen and fuel. Meanwhile, the water content within the foam continues to reduce the temperature of the fire zone, making it particularly effective for oil and liquid fuel fires.
Dry powder extinguishers primarily rely on chemical inhibition. After being discharged, the powder rapidly covers the combustion area and interrupts the free-radical chain reaction that sustains burning. This allows for fast suppression of flames and makes it suitable for electrical fires and flammable liquid fires.
Gas-based suppression systems extinguish fires by reducing oxygen concentration and absorbing heat. For example, carbon dioxide displaces oxygen in the surrounding air, creating an environment that cannot support combustion. In addition, the expansion of the gas absorbs heat, further lowering the temperature of the fire scene.
In forest firefighting scenarios, air-based equipment is also widely used. Its working principle is based on high-speed airflow that physically disrupts flame structure, separates fire from fuel, and removes heat, achieving suppression through mechanical force.
Overall, although firefighting equipment operates on different principles, they all function by cooling, oxygen reduction, or chemical inhibition to disrupt combustion conditions, ensuring efficient and safe fire suppression across various scenarios.
